The skoolie buying and build checklist
A phase-by-phase checklist from before you look at a bus through to living in it.
Most first-build problems are ordering failures rather than skill failures. This checklist walks the phases in the order the decisions actually depend on each other.
Phase 1 — Before You Even Look at a Bus

Phase 4 — Legal, Weight, and Licensing (Before You Drive It Home)

- [ ] Confirm whether your state requires a CDL or special non-commercial license for this specific bus's weight and passenger configuration before you drive it anywhere.
- [ ] Confirm whether an air brake endorsement is required, independent of the weight question.
- [ ] Arrange liability insurance (commercial-vehicle-for-personal-use is the common product) before the drive home, not after — one bus buyer's own annotated checklist specifically flags calling an insurer before "plopping down the cash".
- [ ] Confirm your state's process and requirements for temporary/one-way tags if transporting the bus any distance.
Phase 5 — Planning (Before Any Demolition)

- [ ] Calculate total water and tank capacity needs against the weight budget from Phase 5 before purchasing tanks.
- [ ] Decide insulation approach and thickness before finishing walls, not reactively once walls are partly built — one owner measured factory roof insulation at just 1.5 inches and describes it as looking "more like spiders holding hands," underscoring how thin factory insulation typically is and why the replacement decision matters.
- [ ] If gutting the headliner for reinsulation, confirm the added labor is worth it for your specific climate rather than assuming it automatically is — this was raised as an open, unresolved question even among experienced planners.
Phase 7 — Living With It (Things People Forget Until It's Too Late)
- [ ] Install a working CO alarm and smoke detector before the first night sleeping in the bus, even mid-build, not just at "finished" stage.
- [ ] Confirm mounting hardware for every major system (toilet, cabinetry, appliances) is rated for vehicle vibration, not just residential fastening.
- [ ] Build in service access to plumbing, electrical, and mechanical points before finishing walls over them — reopening finished walls to fix a fault discovered late is one of the most commonly reported expensive mistakes in this niche.
