Freightliner FS-65 (1990-2007)
The classic skoolie platform and still the one most converters recommend to a first-time builder. Mechanically simple by modern standards, with pre-emissions or early-emissions diesels that can be worked on at any truck shop and parts available everywhere. The long hood is dead space for living, but it keeps engine noise and heat forward of the cabin, which most people prefer once they have spent a night in a rear-engine bus. Rear axle wheel wells intrude about a foot into the floor on each side.
Check before you buy
- Dimensions here are planning estimates from community data, not an OEM spec sheet.
- Wheelbase, GVWR and drivetrain are build-order data - confirm on the vehicle.
Blue Bird Vision Diesel
A current conventional Type C platform with seven wheelbases, a 77-inch interior height and broad Allison transmission availability. It is one of the cleanest starting points for a data-driven full-size skoolie comparison.
Works in its favour
- Strong parts familiarity and current OEM support
- Wide wheelbase range from short to full-size bodies
- Conventional hood improves engine access
- 77-inch factory headroom
Check before you buy
- Rear overhang and body length vary independently of wheelbase
- Short wheelbase models may have materially smaller fuel tanks
- Exact axle ratio and tire package are build-order data
- Buildable-space figures are planning estimates, not OEM dimensions
